Back to the Garden

btgcov1transpar-buffer"I came upon a child of God, he was walking along the road, and I asked him, 'where are you going?' And this he told me: 'I'm going on down to Yasgur's farm, I'm gonna join in a rock-n-roll band, I'm gonna camp out on the land, I'm gonna try and get my soul free.' We are stardust, we are golden, and we've got to get ourselves back to the garden."
                                   —"Woodstock" by Joni Mitchell

Originally released in 1999,Back to the Gardenis the fictional account of the life of one of the apocryphal Woodstock babies— children reputedly born at the original Woodstock music festival in August of 1969. The novel takes its name from the classic rock song, "Woodstock," written by Joni Mitchell and later covered by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

Inspired by the Woodstock twenty-fifth anniversary concert that took place in 1994, the author began formulating the plot in his mind for the novel as a what-if type of story that same year. He was intrigued by the idea of a Woodstock child; by the possibilities of what kind of childhood he or she might have had, and what kind of adult he or she might have grown into.

The tale's protagonist is named Tommy Redivo, and the time frame of the novel is 1991-1995. It is narrated largely by Tommy Redivo's close friend, Will, and it is through his eyes that readers witness punk rock-Tom's conflicts with his hippie-Mom; his relationships with his younger half-sisters; the battles he has with his step-father; the comedic episodes he shares with his friends; and finally, his tumultuous rise to celebrity status when he reveals himself to the world as one of the long-lost Woodstock babies
